Economics is one of the social science subjects studied at the Senior Secondary School (SSS) level in Nigerian secondary schools under the National Policy on Education. In response to developments in economics parlance, three books have been written specifically to meet the needs of economics students in years 1, 2 and 3, respectively of the senior secondary school. The need to equip students of the subject economics was the major factor in writting this book. As a result of reading this book, Senior Secondary School (SSS) students will be equiped with the basic knowledge and skills that will greatly help and guide them to pass varying examinations both in their school and those of NECO and WAEC final examinations brilliantly. Additionally, attempts have been made in this book to present economics as a subject that has practical relevance to everyday life. The series aims at achieving the following set objectives:
* To impart knowledge of basic principles of economics necessary for success at the senior secondary certificate examination and preparatory for higher education.
* To prepare and encourage students to be prudent and effective in the management of scarce resources.
* To enhance students’ respect for the dignity of labour and their appreciation of economic, cultural and social values of our society.
* To enable students to acquire knowledge for the practical solution of the economic problems of society.
To achieve the above stated goals, the series have been structured based on the spiral spread that enables a concept or topic to be studied in its basic form in Year 1 of the senior secondary school and to be more detailed at the year 3. The series has the following features:
* A section on summary based on the issues of discussion in the particular chapter.
* There is a section on class activities which has been included in order to ensure that the students actively participate in the learning process which is known to be dynamic at all times. To this end, there are some class activities that instructed students to visit the internet to retrieve some information that will be used for discussion in the class.
* Further, elementary mathematical and statistical tools of analysis are included right from the first year to reduce the problems faced by students who have phobia for mathematics and those who may wish to study economics in higher institutions of learning.
* Additionally, there is the glossary that provides detailed explanation and meaning of new terms that appear in the text. This is with the aim of relieving students of having to refer to the Dictionary of Economics all the time.
* In order to reduce the degree of abstraction often associated with economics, appropriate examples have been provided in the textbook.
